New Festival Director
The First Saturday in Smithville Art Festival is still going strong after all these years. This year is an exciting year for the Festival. For three years this Festival has been put on entirely with volunteer staff. Now for the first time the LPAA, which sponsors the festival, has hired a Festival Director to coordinate the Festival and its volunteers.
The new Festival Director is PK Scott of Smithville, Texas. Ms. Scott was recently accepted in to the Nonprofit Leadership and Management certification program at Austin Community College. Ms. Scott is bringing a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the festival along with some great ideas. The LPAA is committed to the growth and expansion of the Festival and with a dedicated Festival Director will be able to move forward in the marketing of the Festival and its Artists.
The Festival is held on the grounds of the Gazebo at the south end of Main Street in Smithville, Texas on the First Saturday of the month from March through December. Featuring vendors and artists in art media from ceramics to jewelry to woodcrafts to painting to papermaking to photography and many more hand-crafted works, this event is family friendly.

Gallery News
In honor of Texas Independence Day on March 2 our next show for March and April is "Texas State of Mind". The reception for Texas State Of Mind will be on March 12 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. Also featured will be the kids having a show of their work from their art class in February and March.
Art for the "Texas State of Mind" show will be accepted and art from the previous show can be picked up March 3rd and 4th from 1 to 4pm. Karen Darr will be out of commission for this show, and Stephanie will be filling in for her. If these times don’t work for you and you need to make other arrangements contact Steph. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities to help her out. Distributing fliers help receiving art work and hanging the show, cleaning the gallery for the reception... Contact Steph if you want to help. ifalltopieces@msn.com or 979-702-1246.
Open Studio Wednesdays
The art center will now be open to anyone wanting to come and bring an art project to work on in a time of social creativity. Every Wednesday the studio upstairs will be open from 1pm till 8pm. This also means the gallery will be open during this time too! Bill Slette will be on hand doing his pencil drawings during the day, and the evening hours will be shared by Jo Watts and Stephanie Shroyer, Pam Latham, and other volunteers will be on hand to help you feel at home. You do not have to be a member to participate. This is a good chance to come check out our space and see if you want to be a part of our organization. Or if you are a member, bring a friend!
So bring a project, and you can leave it in your very own drawer with your supplies so you don’t have to haul it up and down. You can even bring a sack lunch, or supper and dine as you play. Don’t know what to do? Come on up and we can get you started on something donations can go into the kitty for utilities and any supplies you may use from the center.
Art Classes and Workshops at the Art Center
The art center is also offering a wide variety of art classes and workshops for art enthusiasts of all levels. Classes are being offered for children as well as adults.
Kida art classes have been going on Thursday nights at the Mary Nichols Art Center and the kids are loving it. They will be showing their creations at the reception on March 12. Another 6 week session will be available for them starting the week after Easter. A program will also be available to tweens and teens around the same time.
